Electrical Engineer

Location: Based in Monterey, CA or Santa Cruz, CA. A nearby remote location may be considered.

 

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

 

This position is responsible for completing detailed designs, including preparing drawings and specifications, completing, or assisting with completing technical calculations, coordinating work within the Engineering team and other outside disciplines, and managing the submittal review process and other contract administration activities associated with construction phase services.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Design basic to moderately complex electrical systems with minimal guidance, including normal, emergency, and backup power electrical distribution systems, lighting and lighting control systems, and special systems including fire alarm, nurse calls, etc.

  • Incorporate the requirements of applicable building and energy codes and standards into the project design.

  • Perform field investigations relevant to the design of electrical systems.

  • Coordinate with utility providers: understand, properly apply, and communicate standards to the design and construction team.

  • Analyze project electrical load requirements (existing and new) to inform electrical system design approach, sizing, and requirements

  • Perform electrical calculations, including demand and connected load estimates, voltage drop, short circuit, and energy code calculations.

  • Design, select and size electrical distribution equipment, feeders, and end-use power connections that adhere to utility company requirements, the AHJ, and all applicable codes.

  • Size, select and specify backup power systems, including generator, UPS, and ATS systems.

  • Size, layout, and coordinate requirements of electrical and IT equipment rooms, accounting for working clearances and construction limitations.

  • Calculate lighting photometrics using industry-standard computer programs. Design lighting and lighting control systems, including fixture selections, fixture and lighting control device layouts, and scheduling. Develop lighting system control sequence of operations and control diagrams to meet project performance, design, and energy code requirements.

  • Coordinate, collaborate and communicate project requirements and space requirements for electrical systems with the project architect, Contractor, or other engineering disciplines inside and outside ColeBreit Engineering.

  • Edit two-dimensional drawing files in AutoCAD or three-dimensional models in Revit.

  • Edit project specifications, including writing additional sections and/or paragraphs for unique project requirements.

  • Develop clear, concise, and appropriate system narratives, including consideration for writing, organizing the document, and including/developing appropriate images.

  • Perform assigned tasks within the project budget.

  • Adhere to ColeBreit's design and technical standards, including incorporating quality control processes.

  • Review and comment on Contractor product data submittals and shop drawings.

  • Represent the design to the construction team and AHJ.

  • Observe and confirm the design is installed as required by the construction documents.

  • Respond to Contractor questions, and understand potential future impacts that responses may have on the design team.

  • Conduct construction site walk-throughs and write clear and concise field observation reports.

  • Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality of client and business operations information.

  • Safely use all equipment and materials. Follow established safety procedures, use appropriate safeguards, and observe common-sense safety rules in all on-the-job activities.

  • Contribute to a collaborative work environment, and promote cooperation, commitment, and accountability within the team to achieve short- and long-range team goals in line with the company's mission, vision, and values.

  • Communicate clearly, actively listen and build relationships of trust both internally and externally.

  • Maintain and develop professional and technical knowledge by participating in/utilizing in-house educational training/materials and establishing and maintaining professional networks.

  • Communicate any known violation of any office policy, code, safety policy, or law immediately to leadership.

  • Regularly serves as discipline lead and engineer of record on projects.

Business Development

  • Assist and/or prepare proposals from business development activities and coordinate such activities with appropriate management and project management staff.

  • Participate in various networking opportunities to promote the company brand.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position may include the responsibility of supervising other team members, as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in the office in which they are assigned. 

 

TRAVEL

This position may require local travel (within 50 miles of home office) and occasionally requires travel outside of 50 miles from home office. 

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering or related field (as appropriate for position) from an ABET accredited institution.

  • PE registration in the State of California or Oregon (or another state with the ability to obtain registration in California or Oregon).

  • Experience in MEP consulting showing skills at the project, client, staff, and firm management level.

  • Knowledge in electrical systems design, system alternatives, and renewable energy systems.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize in a fluid changing environment.

  • Must be organized, flexible, independent, and self-motivated, enthusiastic, dependable, detail-oriented.

  • Ability to foster a collaborative work environment and lead team efforts by promoting cooperation, commitment, and accountability within the team to achieve short- and long-range team goals in line with the company's mission, vision, and values.

  • Ability to develop and maintain appropriate relationships with superiors, peers, colleagues, clients, and vendors.

  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, including accurate grammar and business correspondence knowledge.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Proficient in Revit.
