Senior Electrical Engineer

Location: Bay Area/South Bay/Peninsula region in California, to support ColeBreit Engineering’s California offices in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Napa, CA.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer at ColeBreit Engineering, you will be responsible for the technical design and execution of electrical engineering work from project initiation through construction completion, working with minimal guidance. You’ll design electrical systems ranging from straightforward to highly complex, conduct field investigations, perform engineering calculations, develop specifications, and help ensure our work meets applicable codes, standards, and ColeBreit’s quality expectations.

HAVE STRONG TECHNICAL EXPERTISE IN ELECTRICAL DESIGN

You can design normal, emergency, and backup power distribution systems, lighting and lighting controls, and evaluate electrical load requirements to determine appropriate system design, sizing, and requirements.

KNOW HOW TO TAKE A DESIGN FROM CONCEPT THROUGH EXECUTION

You can design and specify electrical distribution components, including low- and medium-voltage equipment, feeders, grounding and bonding systems, end-use power connections, and backup power systems such as generators, UPS, and ATS systems.

 

CARE ABOUT QUALITY AND THE DETAILS

You understand the importance of codes, technical standards, quality-control processes, project budgets, and identifying potential scope creep before it becomes a larger issue.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES MAY INCLUDE: 

Within the first 30 days: 

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of ColeBreit Engineering’s design and technical standards, quality-control processes, and expectations for electrical project delivery.  

  • Become familiar with active electrical projects, applicable project requirements, codes, standards, and existing design documentation.  

  • Begin contributing to electrical system design and calculations, including electrical load requirements, distribution systems, lighting, and lighting controls.  

  • Establish working relationships with project team members and become familiar with ColeBreit’s project workflows.  

3-4 months and ongoing: 

  • Independently design electrical systems with minimal guidance, including normal, emergency, and backup power distribution systems, lighting, and lighting controls.  

  • Perform electrical calculations, including demand and connected load estimates, voltage drop, short-circuit, and energy code calculations.  

  • Conduct field investigations and incorporate existing conditions, utility requirements, AHJ requirements, and applicable codes into project designs.  

  • Design and specify electrical distribution components, including low- and medium-voltage equipment, feeders, grounding and bonding systems, and end-use power connections.  

  • Develop project specifications, control sequences, diagrams, and point lists.  

  • Perform assigned work within established project budgets and proactively identify potential scope creep.  

6-12 months and ongoing:  

  • Take technical ownership of complex electrical design work from project initiation through construction completion with minimal guidance.  

  • Design and integrate backup power and alternative-energy systems, including generators, UPS, ATS, photovoltaic, battery-storage, and cogeneration systems, as applicable to project requirements.  

  • Independently conduct quality-control checks of electrical designs and consistently apply ColeBreit Engineering’s design and technical standards.  

  • Evaluate electrical system alternatives and determine appropriate solutions based on project requirements and conditions, including fire alarm, nurse call, and low- and medium-voltage systems.  

  • Serve as engineer of record when assigned and properly authorized.

EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: 

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in MEP engineering with a strong focus on electrical system design for commercial, healthcare, residential, and process projects, including calculations, specifications, and discipline management required  

  • 2+ years of leadership experience transitioning from a hands-on technical engineering role to a discipline/project management role, demonstrating leadership in project strategy, team coordination, and technical oversight required  

  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Electrical Engineering, with registration in California (or ability to obtain licensure in California within 90 days of employment) required  

  • Proven project and technical leadership, including the ability to define problems, analyze data, and draw valid conclusions, while providing mentorship to junior team members and overseeing project delivery required  

  • Strong written & verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear technical reports, accurate business correspondence, & effectively present information to diverse stakeholders required  

  • Demonstrated expertise in electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, fire alarm, nurse call, and low- and medium-voltage systems, including evaluating system alternatives and strategic system selection to meet project-specific requirements and conditions required 

  • Proven proficiency in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD required 

  • Working knowledge of Bluebeam having used this software application to work through client projects highly preferred 

  • Working knowledge of load simulation software such as Trane, Carrier, or Energy Pro highly preferred 

  • Demonstrated working experience ensuring compliance with California’s specific building codes and regulations highly preferred 

  • Active participation in professional organizations such as ASHRAE or similar, demonstrating ongoing engagement with industry standards and developments preferred ​
