Senior Fire Protection Engineer

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

 

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for leading fire protection engineering projects from inception to completion, providing technical mentoring to staff, and potentially managing team members as appropriate. This position entails the application of principles of fire protection engineering to design and consult on buildings and facilities to ensure the safety of occupants and properties from fire and related hazards.  

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Serve as the discipline lead and engineer of record as required on fire protection projects. 

  • Design, layout, and review complex fire protection systems, including but not limited to sprinkler systems, standpipe and hose streams, fire pumps, water storage for private fire protection, private service mains, and alarm system requirements, accounting for constructible installation and equipment service requirements with minimal guidance. 

  • Incorporate the requirements of applicable codes, standards (NFPA, International Building Code, state codes, local codes, etc.), and client specifications into project designs. 

  • Must have familiarity with special hazards, smoke control systems, detection and alarm systems. 

  • Perform site visits and hazard assessments. Assess and analyze potential hazards, understanding the specific challenges and requirements of each site. 

  • Prepare and review fire protection system calculations, including hydraulic analysis, fire pump sizing, and fire water storage requirements. Familiarity with hydraulic calculation software, including HydraCAD, AutoSprink (preferred), or similar.  

  • Develop and edit fire protection system drawings using AutoCAD and Revit (preferred). 

  • Write and edit project specifications, including writing additional sections and/or paragraphs for unique project requirements. 

  • Develop clear, concise, and appropriate system narratives, including consideration for writing, organizing the document, and including/developing appropriate images. 

  • Conduct independent quality control checks on fire protection designs of projects. 

  • Participate in project meetings and provide expert advice on fire protection and life safety issues. 

  • Coordinate, collaborate, and communicate project requirements and space requirements for fire protection systems with the Project Architect, Contractor, or other engineering disciplines, both inside and outside of ColeBreit Engineering. 

  • Represent the design team to the construction team and AHJ. 

  • Conduct and oversee site inspections to verify installation and compliance with the design, specifications, and codes. 

  • Respond to construction RFIs and review shop drawings and submittals related to fire protection systems. 

  • Support business development activities, including proposal writing and client presentations. 

  • Recruit and mentor junior fire protection engineers and technicians. 

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, technologies, and codes related to fire protection engineering. 

  • Adhere to ColeBreit Engineering design and technical standards, including incorporating quality control processes. 

  • Conduct construction site walk-throughs, observing and confirming the design is installed as required by the construction documents and write clear and concise field observation reports. 

  • Ensure that project budgets are adhered to, keeping an eye out for scope creep.  

  • Maintain strict adherence to confidentiality of client and business operations information. 

  • Safely use all equipment and materials. Follow established safety procedures, use appropriate safeguards, and observe common-sense safety rules in all on-the-job activities.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT 

  • Maintain sufficient and effective sales efforts and company promotion to keep personnel productively engaged. 

  • Assist and/or prepare proposals from business development activities and coordinate such activities with appropriate management and project management staff. 

  • Participate in various networking opportunities to promote the company brand.

TALENT MANAGEMENT 

  • Recruit potential employees, review resumes, and interview appropriate candidates for hire.  

  • Work with Firm Leadership to develop programs for staff development, continuing education, and employee training. Promote the company’s interests and provide avenues of individual advancement in technology, responsibilities, and position, including mentoring junior staff for career advancement. 

  • Contribute to a collaborative work environment, and promote cooperation, commitment, and accountability within the team to achieve short- and long-range team goals in line with the company’s mission, vision, and values.  

  • Communicate clearly, actively listen and build relationships of trust both internally and externally.  

  • Maintain and develop professional and technical knowledge by participating in/utilizing in-house educational training/materials and establishing and maintaining professional networks.  

  • Communicate any known violation of any office policy, code, safety policy, or law immediately to leadership.  

  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position may include the responsibility of supervising other team members, as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in the office in which they are assigned (preferred), hybrid or fully remote positions may be considered. 

 

TRAVEL

This position regularly requires local travel (within 50 miles of home office) and often requires travel outside of 50 miles from home office (day trips). Occasionally requires overnight travel. 

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in fire protection engineering (preferred), mechanical engineering, or a related field (as appropriate for the position). 

  • PE registration in the State of California or Oregon (or another state with the ability to obtain registration in California or Oregon). 

  • With 8 years of experience in fire protection consulting, with skills in project management, client management and staff management. 

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  

  • Detailed working knowledge of various fire protection systems and system alternatives for proper application of systems to meet project requirements and conditions, including staying current on industry technology developments that could be applied to project design. 

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize in a fluid changing environment. 

  • Must be organized, flexible, independent, and self-motivated, enthusiastic, dependable, detail oriented. 

  • Ability to foster a collaborative work environment and lead team efforts by promoting cooperation, commitment, and accountability within the team to achieve short- and long-range team goals in line with the company’s mission, vision, and values. 

  • Ability to develop and maintain appropriate relationships with superiors, peers, colleagues, clients, and vendors. 

  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, including accurate grammar and business correspondence knowledge.
