MBARI Building G — Instrumentation Integration + Testing Facility
Summary
ColeBreit Engineering provided mechanical and plumbing engineering services for MBARI Building G, a 31,900-square-foot Instrumentation Integration and Testing Facility at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Designed as a state-of-the-art research and development laboratory, the facility supports MBARI’s ongoing marine science, technology development, and testing activities.
Working as part of the design-build team, ColeBreit completed the HVAC and plumbing system design and developed fire protection sprinkler design criteria for implementation by the design-build fire protection contractor. The team also coordinated closely with the architect and project consultants through final design and provided construction-phase site visits to review and coordinate HVAC and plumbing installation.
The facility’s coastal location introduced additional resiliency considerations. With the site located near the Pacific Ocean, ColeBreit coordinated the plumbing design to account for FEMA flood-zone requirements and potential future sea-level rise, helping support the facility’s long-term performance in a sensitive coastal environment.
